Magosaburo Ohara, the father of Soichiro Ohara, the founder of Hokkaido Mingei Furniture, made great contributions to the development of Japanese arts and crafts by founding the Ohara Museum of Art in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture, the first museum of modern Western painting in Japan.

At the same time, he deeply sympathized with and understood the folk craft movement that emerged around Muneyoshi Yanagi in the early Showa period (1920s-1940s). Muneyoshi Yanagi, along with Shoji Hamada, Kanjiro Kawai, Kenkichi Tomimoto, and later the Englishman Bernard Leach, advocated that “the true form of crafts lies in the crafts of the people.” In 1964, Soichiro Ohara established Hokkaido Folk Crafts Woodwork Co., Ltd. in Hokkaido to carry on the ideas of Muneyoshi Yanagi and the will of his father Magosaburo, and to “restore the longing for traditional crafts in the hearts of the Japanese people through the revival of folk crafts.”

True Beauty in Everyday Items

The origin of the folk craft movement lies in the idea that “true beauty can be found in daily utensils,” in other words, “the beauty of use.” In 1964, Soichiro Ohara was concerned that the abundance of Japanese people’s daily utensils would lead them to be dominated by inorganic objects. This is because a life surrounded by impersonal objects loses the joy of using them and the spirit of cherishing them. What is required is a product that has a genuine style, yet fits in well with daily life and can be used for a long time. We have chosen to pursue authenticity by respecting the skills of our craftsmen and incorporating modern technology to enhance the precision of our products. Furniture that is familiar to everyone and worthy of being loved. The folk craft philosophy advocated by Muneyoshi Yanagi and passed down to the Ohara father and son is still alive and well in Hokkaido Mingei Furniture.
