Takayama for furniture and Matsumoto for crafts. Hida (northern Gifu Prefecture) and Shinshu (Nagano Prefecture), located next to each other across the Northern Alps in the bosom of the beautiful yet harsh natural environment, have historically had various connections. For several years during the Meiji Era (1868-1912), the two areas were once joined in a single prefecture. Hida Takayama and Matsumoto in Shinshu are now known for their woodworking. However, there have not been many opportunities for them both to come together in one place.
In this exhibition, we will introduce the artisans and their works, showcasing four Matsumoto-based artists in a gallery in old-town Takayama. All of them have independently developed new fields related to incorporating wood in daily life. We will also explore the potential of cedar through the production of works using the compressed cedar wood developed by Hida Sangyo.
We hope that this new exchange between Hida and Shinshu will encourage you to think about how wood will be involved in your life, and about the joy of making things with wood.
